Self image - a world without mirrors
Hello hello! After a long long time again I am here to pen my thoughts. Not as a psychologist or any kind of an expert… but a normal thinker who wants clarity of thought. This definitely isn‘t a self help blog either!
So hier goes… I am sitting in a tram, going to work and suddenly I see my reflection in the glass. I start to imagine hey do any other creatures need to see their reflection? Abhishek Upmanyu‘s joke comes to my mind, where he says… a cat looks at other cat‘s hairstyle and „agar iski sahi hai to meri bhi sahi hai“.
Mirrors were invented by us and no other creature really uses it. So society, world naturally works on social image… where everyone of us or atleast in our immediate circle have the same values of hierarchy and we get reactions to how we behave, look, wear, how much money we have. Etc. And a favourable reaction that makes us feel comfortable is the so called „validation“. Now what we are really struggling is having conflicting opinions about ourselves based on what we see in the mirror, what we see in our own minds, and what the society sees us as. On a longer average of time the society sees us in a particular way and that is why we keep getting similar treatment on an average +- 2sigma. We all know this is the truth, if we can accept it or not, thats another story. This can be easily judged by our complaint, „ why do I keep meeting the same kind of people“ Apart from some extreme outliers where we can clearly say, that that person themselves is a narcissist or a downright Asshole the world on an average reacts to how we truly our and depict ourselves. And we can only change their narrative if we work on ourselves. Eat better, get fitter, get richer, communicate better, wear good clothes, listen to others better, etc. The world is telling us where we need to work on our social self… we need to be curiously listening to it to get any kind of a result. And if there were no mirrors then this would be all we could do. But a mirror teaches us one step more - humility and feedback. Mirror tells us how it looks like when we are doing right or wrong… mirror gives us the reality check thats it! A world without mirrors is a world where we used to observe others and judge ourselves based on it too!! „If they look good wearing ripped jeans… so will I“
i hope this isnt too complicated to understand!
cheers!!
